NEWS, NEWS, NEWS & THE OTHER PANDEMIC...

Have you been to the library lately??? No????  So, you don’t know what you are missing… We have received new books, new series, new comics…

Whether you are a fan of Hilary Mantel or you prefer the graphic novel form of the Maltese-born Joe Sacco I’m sure you‘ll find something to fulfill your interests. Books such as Bring Up the Bodies; The Mirror and the Light; The Blazing World;  Freedom;  The Plot against America;  Paying the Land; Bone or Safe Area Gorazde  are waiting for you.

If you are not in the mood for reading and you prefer spending a Sunday afternoon/evening watching a TV show you are extremely luc
ky as the political satire Yes Minister & Yes, Prime Minister are at your disposal at the school library  as well. Do you dare to have a look at the favourite television programme of the then
Prime Minister of the United KingdomMargaret Thatcher?

And last but not least… here you have a proposal to celebrate November 25th, International Day against Violence, the book Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo where you will find several interconnected stories of black British women which raise timeless questions about feminism and race. Girl, Woman, Other is about struggle, but it is also about love, joy and imagination. The book culminates with her protagonists – black women of different generations, faiths, classes, politics and heritages, and a few men too – thrown together at a party for a soap opera-style grand finale. Evaristo’s world is not idealised, but there is something uniquely beautiful about it... You will regret not to give it a try.

Books to Warm the Soul (or Just Distract It)

Now more than ever, home is where many of us are seeking refuge and solace. This is a tough time, we’re unsure of what the coming weeks hold but we do know for certain that we need a distraction or two. What better way to remove yourself from reality, than to become absorbed in a book?

While social distancing seems to be the key to be safe and sound, books have the power to make us travel wherever we want, to heal the wounds of the soul, to make us dream of better times and to plan the moment when we will be able to gather together for a beer, to kiss each other, to dance, to hug…..to LIVE!!.

O Soto do Óptico is closed until further notice but there is a piece of good news: a lot of editorials are now allowing you to download books for free, so in order to commemorate the Book Day on April 23rd we have chosen a selection of books for you to read online or to download:

And before leaving, here you have a fantastic song by The Police as a short reminder for all of us to keep social distances: Don't stand close to me!!!  See you soon!!!
